Care Assistant Jobs in the UK 2026: Pay, Visa Rules and How to Apply

adminBy adminOctober 7, 2026No Comments8 Mins Read

Care assistants help older people and adults with disabilities to live with dignity. They support washing, dressing, eating, moving about and taking part in daily activities, either in a care home or in the person’s own house. It is personal, hands-on work that calls for patience and kindness.

The United Kingdom has an ageing population, and its care sector has carried a large number of unfilled posts for years. Care homes and home care agencies in every nation and region advertise for staff all year. Even so, demand inside the country does not mean an easy route from abroad.

One fact must be stated plainly. In July 2025 the UK government closed new overseas recruitment for care workers under the Health and Care Worker visa. In 2026, these jobs are mainly open to people who already have the right to work in the UK.

This guide covers indicative pay, duties, the checks employers carry out, documents and how to apply if you are eligible. We are an information website, not a care provider or sponsor. We cannot offer a job, a certificate of sponsorship or a visa to anyone.

📝 How to Apply, Step by Step

  1. Confirm your right to work Check your status on the government website before anything else. Without the right to work, a care provider cannot lawfully employ you.
  2. Write an honest CV Include every job and explain any gap. Mention any time spent caring for a relative, since employers value that experience.
  3. Search official job sites Use the government’s Find a job service, the NHS Jobs site and major job portals. Search “care assistant” or “support worker” with your town.
  4. Check the provider In England, look up the care provider’s inspection rating on the regulator’s website. A well-rated service is usually a better workplace.
  5. Interview and checks Expect questions about dignity, safety and what you would do in real situations. The employer then requests references and a criminal record check.
  6. Induction and shadow shifts New starters complete induction training and work alongside an experienced carer before working alone.

🧭 Life and Work as a Care Assistant in the UK

🛂 The Visa Position in 2026

From 22 July 2025, care worker and senior care worker roles can no longer be used for new Health and Care Worker visa applications from overseas. A transition period lets some people already in the UK extend or switch under strict conditions. Rules have changed several times, so read the government pages directly.

⏰ Shifts and Rotas

Care is needed all day and all night. Care homes commonly use long day or night shifts of about twelve hours, while home care is split into early, lunch, tea and evening rounds. Weekend work is normal. Rotas are usually issued a few weeks ahead.

🚗 Home Care and Travel

Home care workers travel between clients, often by car. By law, average pay for all working time, including travel between visits, must not fall below the minimum wage. Ask how travel time and fuel are paid, because practice differs between agencies.

🎓 Training and Qualifications

New carers complete induction standards known as the Care Certificate. After that, many employers fund a Level 2 or Level 3 diploma in adult care. These qualifications support a move to senior carer, and some people later train as nursing associates or nurses.

💷 Cost of Living

Rent takes a large share of a care worker’s wage, most of all in London and the South East. Council tax, energy bills and transport add to it. Sharing a house and living close to work are the usual ways to keep monthly costs under control.

💙 The Emotional Side

Care work brings close bonds with the people you support, and also illness, confusion and loss. Good employers offer supervision meetings where you can talk things through. Being calm, respectful and observant matters as much as physical strength in this job.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a UK care worker visa from abroad in 2026?

New overseas applications for care worker roles closed in July 2025. Check the official visa page for any change.

Do I need experience?

Not always. Many providers train beginners who show the right attitude. Senior roles need experience and a diploma.

What is the minimum hourly pay?

The National Living Wage is £12.71 per hour for those aged 21 and over from April 2026. Many employers pay close to it.

What is a DBS check?

It is a criminal record check used in England and Wales for work with vulnerable people. The employer applies for it.

Should I pay for a certificate of sponsorship?

No. Selling sponsorship is unlawful, and people who paid have lost large sums. Report anyone who asks for payment.

Does this website sponsor care workers?

No. We publish information only. We are not a licensed sponsor and cannot arrange jobs or visas.

⚠️ Avoid Job Scams: Never pay for a UK care job, a certificate of sponsorship or a “guaranteed visa”. Overseas recruitment for care workers is closed, so offers of this kind to people abroad are very likely to be fraud. Check any sponsor’s name on the government’s register and trust only official websites.

✍️ Conclusion

Care assistant work in the UK is meaningful and widely available to people who already have the right to work there. For applicants abroad, the door closed in 2025, and anyone who claims otherwise should be treated with caution. Rely on government pages, choose well-rated providers and view all pay figures as a guide.

Salary figures are indicative and immigration rules change often. Always confirm the final terms with the employer and on official UK government websites before you act.
